Mar 6, 13, 20 & 27

How do we define an auteur? What distinguishes a film makers’ output, especially those who work across genres? How useful is the term auteur given the collaborative nature of film production?

This short course aims to explore the divisive auteur theory made popular in the 1950’s by French film magazine, Cahiers du cinéma. Expect, alongside much debate, specific focus on filmakers such as: Greta Gerwig, Baz Luhrmann, David Lynch and Lynne Ramsay.

Julian has been teaching film and film theory for over 30 years. For a time he was an Education Officer at the BFI (British Film Institute) where his role was to encourage an ongoing appreciation of film and help develop media literacy across audiences.
