A  poignant story of a young girl coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, told through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine year old Marjane, who witnesses people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power - forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands - although Marjane has ways of outsmarting the social constraints put upon her, discovering punk music, ABBA and Iron Maiden in the process.

'A delightful, curious film that indulges in both the personal and the political and provides a potted history of modern Iran through one woman's experience' - Dave Calhoun, Time Out
