Porco Rosso

Dir: Hayao Miyazaki
Cast: Shûichirô Moriyama, Tokiko Katô
94mins   1992   Japan   PG   Japanese    Subtitled

Adapted from his own 15-page watercolor manga, Studio Ghibli founder and master animator Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro) directs this beautifully atmospheric tale of a pilot-turned-bounty hunter in post World War I Italy, as fascism is on the rise and he becomes disillusioned with society. This pilot is the mysterious 'Porco Rosso' who, due to an usual curse, also happens to be an anthropomorphic pig. Porco will have to use all of his skills to battle sky-pirates, deal with challenges from egotistical American pilots and to live his life as he wants, free from a fascist government.

'Another animated treat...it's solid Miyazaki' - William Thomas, Empire
