This ten-week online drop-in course looks at classic films that have inspired remakes, spawned sequels or launched franchises. Each week Dr Jenny Stewart and Dr Scott Freer examine the original film and discuss the films that followed them in terms of changed context. The course will cover a diverse range of films.
The sessions will take place from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesday evenings from September 21. The full course costs £60 or you can just book into an individual session for £8.
September 21: Black Panther (2018) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe
September 28: 'King Kong' (1933) - remakes (1976 & 2005), sequels: e.g., 'The Son of Kong' (1933) and franchise: 'King Kong vs. Godzilla' (1962)
October 5: All that Heaven Allows (1955) and Far from Heaven (2002)
October 12: The films of Akira Kurosawa - e.g., 'Seven Samurai' (1954) & 'Yojimbo' (1961) and American Remakes - e.g., 'The Magnificent Seven' (1960) & 'Last Man Standing' (1996)
October 19: Rear Window (1954) and Rear Window (1998)/Disturbia (2007)
October 26: 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (1951 & 2008)
November 2: Batman (1966) and Batman (1989) /The Dark Knight Trilogy (2008-2012)/ Batman Lego Movie (2017)
November 9: 'The Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (1956 & 1978), 'Body Snatchers' (1993) & 'The Invasion' (2007)
November 16: Alien (1979) and the Alien franchise
November 23: Hammer Horror Films - e.g., 'Dracula' (1958) and Blaxploitation: e.g., 'Blacula' (1972) & 'Scream Blacula Scream' (1973)
