Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region. 90% of Rioja's vineyards are planted with red grapes, of which just under 90% is Tempranillo.
However there is a growing contingency of Grenache (Garnacha) more suited to the large sub-region Rioja Oriental. The principal white grape is Viura (aka Macabeo also used for Cava).
This tasting will focus on classic styles of Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva both red and white grapes, finishing with mature vintages from two very great and acclaimed producers.
The wines will include:
Sumarroca El Gran Amigo Gran Reserva, Cava 2017
López de Haro Classica Gran Reserva Blanco, Rioja 2012
Glorioso Gran Reserva, Rioja 2015
Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva, Rioja 2006
La Rioja Alta 904, Gran Reserva, Rioja 2004 (Magnum)
