Part of our Douglas Sirk mini-season, with Imitation of Life on 23 April.
Prior to this screening there will be a talk on Douglas Sirk in the studio (the talk is free to attend but must be booked).
Mitch Wayne is a geologist working for the Hadleys, an oil-rich Texas family. While the patriarch, Jared, works hard to establish the family business, his irresponsible son, Kyle, is an alcoholic playboy, and his daughter, Marylee, has a reputation for sexual promiscuity. Mitch harbours a secret love for Kyle's unsatisfied wife, Lucy, a fact that leaves him exposed when the jealous Marylee accuses him of murder.
'In countless ways visible and invisible, Sirk's sly subversion skewed American popular culture, and helped launch a new age of irony' - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
