1 – 28 February
QueerFest returns for a third year at Depot! This year’s programme will explore the theme of desire through a diverse programme of contemporary and classic Queer cinema.
Our desires inform many aspects of who we are and how we behave, however Queer desire is often portrayed as taboo or other by heteronormative society. We want to challenge such attitudes and consider the ways that desire manifests within Queer communities: who we want to be, to love, to touch, and everything else in between.
Cinema provides an opportunity to delve into different life experiences, and this year we will celebrate the art of storytelling in sweet and sexy comedy drama The Summer with Carmen; see how performance and transformation in the drag world inform personal identity with Solo; engage in conversation around trans representation in recent Golden Globe winner Emilia Pérez; and encounter the strength of Queer sisterhood in the face of conservatism with Power Alley.
We will observe the world of India’s ‘third gender’, Hijra, with laughter and excitement in India’s 1st Best Trans Model Agency; be immersed in an all-female tale of tormented romance in Fassbinder’s classic The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant; and discuss the tricky business of adaptation with a special edition of Book to Film Club on Queer, Luca Guadagnino’s singular take on the novella by William S. Burroughs.
