Little Amélie workshop

75mins   Depot event

For Amélie, everything is new and exciting. Life is one big adventure as she carefully observes the world around her. But on her third birthday, everything changes. In Japan, it is believed that children are still a little divine until the age of three. From that moment on, Amélie becomes a “normal” child. She begins to speak, to feel emotions, and to discover the garden around her home, the changing seasons and the passing of time. As Amélie grows, she realises that life is not always as perfect as it seems, even if your grandma makes you taste delicious Belgian chocolate..
Little Amélie or the Character of Rain is a stunning animated adaptation of the novel by Belgian author Amélie Nothomb. Tender, thoughtful and surprising, the film offers a gentle introduction to growing up, identity and the small wonders of everyday life.
Accompanying the screening, Small World Cinema will run a workshop where we will look at the Japanese character of rain and try our hand at recreating it on the page. We will also craft our own festive Japanese fish kite called a ‘Koinobori'. Koinobori are made to celebrate Children's Day on 5 May and are hung outside to flutter in the wind. Join us for a creative afternoon inspired by the film Little Amélie.
