Wines of Marlborough

The Marlborough wine region lies at the northern end of the famously scenic New Zealand South Island, a bridge (or at least a ferry) away from the more urbanised North. Close to the town of Blenheim (there must be a Churchill connection) the region features over 50 excellent wineries, many walkable or at least cyclable from the town, others stretching west along the banks of the Wairau valley.

The specialty is Sauvignon Blanc, famous around the world for such brands as Villa Maria, Wither Hills, Forrest, Dog Point and the renowned Cloudy Bay wines, perhaps partly famous for their marketing by owners LVMH. Many of these wines are sold in UK wine shops and supermarkets at decent prices. But Marlborough itself has more complex variations on offer including some excellent pinot gris, chardonnay and blends. And there are excellent pinot noir reds and some great sparkling wines on offer.

Close by there are beautiful bays and wonderful walking areas around such as the towns as Picton and Havelock, facing the world famous Marlborough Sounds. This is a perfect destination for wine tasting, walking and scenic views. Depot will be serving a selection of seven Marlborough wines introduced by wine enthusiast Robert Senior, Depot Chair of Trustees.
