Celebrating South Asian Women in Film
November 2024
This November, Depot is celebrating the incredible work of South Asian women in contemporary cinema. We’re showcasing three films by female directors that explore the wide-ranging experiences of women of South Asian heritage. These remarkable and distinctive films explore intergenerational relationships, cultural divides, mixed heritage identity, and the complexities of modern urban life. The start of the season coincides with Diwali celebrations, a significant Hindu festival marked across South Asia and many other countries.
The season begins on 1 November with The Queen of My Dreams, a visually inventive film about a lesbian Pakistani-Canadian woman who embarks on a Bollywood-inspired journey through memories from her conservative mother’s youth in Karachi. This is followed on 20 November by Girls Will Be Girls, in which a 16-year-old girl finds her sexual awakening disrupted by her protective mother. Finally, we end the season with the highly anticipated All We Imagine as Light, the first film from India to compete in the main competition at Cannes since 1994, and winner of the 2024 Grand Prix.
