Wine Tasting: Wines of Japan
Hosted by local wine enthusiast Robert Senior & sommelier Connie Hunter
Thursday 4 December, 20:00
£35 per head

Best known for the domestic production of sake (rice wine) and whiskies such as Suntory, Japan has always been a major wine importer. The popularity of wine has grown rapidly in recent years. As a result the domestic wine industry has expanded rapidly.
London-based sommelier Connie Hunter and local wine enthusiast Robert Senior will take you through a tasting of sparkling, white and red wines complete with Japanese crackers and an additional sake!
The main wine growing regions are Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, and Hokkaido island. The main grape varieties are Koshu, producing light dry fruity whites and Muscat Bailey A which produces good reds. Among other grape varieties Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are widely planted.
Wine production is challenging in Japan as the winters are often bitterly cold and the grapes need protection. Summers can be very wet, creating additional problems. Koshu, which styles like a sauvignon blanc, is notably resilient and popular with Japanese seafood.
Notable wines include Chardonnays from Château Mercian and Takahata Winery and both Suntory and Sapporo now have successful wine ranges.
Wine Tasting: Coastal Wines
Hosted by local wine expert Inbar Galinsky-Johnson
Thursday 5 February, 20:00
£35 per head
18+
Shake off your winter blues with a wine-inspired coastal journey! Wines made in coastal regions are known for their vibrancy, freshness and depth of flavour, and their location by the sea is the key.
Proximity to the coast can also add minerality and even a twist of salinity, making these wines both food-friendly, and a pleasure to sip on their own.
In this tasting we’ll try wines from coastal regions in countries such as Portugal, Spain, Croatia and Greece, and find out what makes these wines so special.
This evening will be hosted by Inbar Galinsky-Johnson, a wine enthusiast for many years, and has attained several wine qualifications, from both the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) and the Wine Scholar Guild. She loves nothing more than sharing her passion for wine and demystifying what can sometimes feel like an elitist subject. She has been co-running a wine tasting group in Hove since 2019, and contributes regularly to The Wine Society members’ Forum.
