ROMERÍA
DIR: CARLA SIMÓN. WITH: LLÚCIA GARCIA, MITCH MARTÍN, TRISTÁN ULLOA. SPAIN, GERMANY 2025. 112 MINS. SPANISH, CATALAN, FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES.
A young woman goes on a coastal road trip in search of clues about her parents in a bittersweet coming of age story.
Eighteen-year-old Marina arrives in Vigo to visit her father's extended family, who have fallen out of touch since the death of her mother and father. She also needs official documentation to prove her father's paternity so that she can enrol on a filmmaking course. But Marina's efforts to strengthen family ties are undermined by secrecy and the lingering shame felt by her relatives.
Drawing on Carla Simón's own experiences, this film returns to the themes explored in her autobiographical debut feature, Summer 1993. Romería reveals the links and contrasts between the past and present, skilfully creating a mood of wistful yearning.
‘This is distinctive, quietly intelligent filmmaking.' Stephanie Zacharek, Time magazine
