Niki, an aspiring writer living in England, visits her Japanese mother, Etsuko, who is struggling with the recent passing of her older daughter.
Desperate to understand her family's history before her birth, Niki asks Etsuko about her life in Nagasaki immediately after the war. Etsuko reflects on her past as a pregnant woman in the rebuilt city.
She recalls a friendship with a strange, elusive woman named Sachiko, who is trying to raise her young daughter, Mariko, while planning to immigrate with an American man Spanning two timelines, and lightly excavating the author’s own family history and cultural heritage.
This is an elegant, moving and hopeful account of the generational impact of war.
