BFI Future Film Festival Presents
South East Shorts + Beyond the Basics:
Mastering Visual Storytelling in Film
17:00 – 20:00 Wednesday 26 February 2025
A special one-off screening celebrating a selection of films from BFI’s Future Film Festival that have been shot across the South East. As well as the films, hand picked by our own KINO Collective young programmer group, the evening will also include a Q&A with some of the filmmakers, networking opportunities and an intensive masterclass in directing, led by award winning director and experienced lecturer, Robert Dee.
The BFI Future Film Festival is the UK’s largest festival for aspiring filmmakers aged 16 to 25. Screenings will take place both at the BFI Southbank in London, as well as across cinemas, like this one, nationwide. The festival also aims to connect young people interested in working in the screen industries with leading experts and practitioners, as well as to give opportunities to meet fellow young creatives, find collaborators and build their networks.
Beyond the Basics: Mastering Visual Storytelling in Film
Ready to take your filmmaking to the next level? Whether you’re shooting short films already or starting out on your first indie project, this intensive one-hour session will help give you the tools to elevate your visuals and create stories that stick! You’ll learn how to think like the pro directors and move beyond just pointing a camera and pressing record. Discover great practical tools to make your storytelling more compelling and develop your own artistic eye.
The session will explore: Visual Subtext: discover how art direction, framing, and composition in space can add layers of meaning to your scenes. Camera Psychology: learn some simple but effective rules to maximise the impact of your shots. Thinking Like a Filmmaker: look at how concepts such as image systems, contrast/affinity and even screen direction can impact the story you’re telling and make your work stand out. Shake up Your Approach: great advice on where to look for ideas beyond cinema, learn how paintings and photographs can inspire you and massively improve your work.
As well as creating award-winning films Robert Dee previously ran the undergraduate programme at Raindance Film School for several years, mentoring students who later went on to direct million dollar films, star in features, and win festival awards. His particular area of interest is visual subtext and the psychology of directing. He also loves horror.
