Production Isn’t Everything – Careers Study Day

A friendly and informal day of speakers discussing their current jobs and early careers in the film industry, with a focus on non-production based roles.

Organised in partnership with BFI Film Academy and Young Film Network South East, this careers event is aimed at students and young people aged 16 – 25 looking at career options in the film industry.

There will be lots of opportunities to ask questions and get useful advice from the speakers, all of whom are currently working in a variety of roles outside of production.

Tickets are £5.00 and the discussions will cover areas such as:

– Film distribution
– Marketing
– Event and film programming
– Film writing & journalism

Event Speakers

Emma Farrugia – Theatrical Sales Manager at MUBI

Emma has worked for MUBI since August 2021 on theatrical releases including; The Worst Person In The World, Decision To Leave, Aftersun, Perfect Days and most recently The Substance and Queer. Emma lives in Brighton and previously worked as the Volunteer Coordinator at Depot, alongside a role at Cineworld Brighton and FrightFest film festival prior to starting at MUBI.

Eleanor Gwynne – Marketing Assistant at Depot cinema

Eleanor has worked at Depot since May 2022, beginning as a participant in the Film, Exhibition, Distribution and Sales (FEDS) traineeship run by the ICO before transitioning to a permanent role as Marketing Assitant. She has a PhD in Philosophy, which was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Royal Institute of Philosophy. She has worked as an Editorial Intern at Penguin Random House, an administrator, and as a freelance copyeditor and proofreader. In 2023 she founded Lazy Girls Film Club, which spotlights alienation and ‘slackerdom’ in female-centric cinema.

Jake Abatan – Digital Communications Officer at Directors UK

Jake is the Digital Communications Officer for Directors UK, the professional association for UK film and TV directors. In the past he has worked as a digital marketer for the Independent Cinema Office and the Connaught Cinema in Worthing. He has also worked as a freelance film critic and editor.

Charlotte Ross – Assistant Film Curator in the Image & Film Licensing team at Imperial War Museums

Charlotte is primarily responsible for supporting the development and documentation of the film collection to improve access and use, curating bespoke film collections that showcase the breadth of IWM’s century-old film archive, and advising commercial customers on the content and context of the film collection.

Charlotte is from London. Before pursuing a career in film curation, her background was in the legal and educational sectors. She has worked for Imperial War Museums since September 2023.
