The Vanishing

The Vanishing coaxes us along on a relatively idyllic holiday with our protagonist Rex and his partner Saskia. After they reach a petrol station, Saskia goes to buy drinks and Rex waits. He waits and waits, until he realises he has lost her.

Three years pass and Rex receives mysterious postcards from someone he believes knows the whereabouts of Saskia.

This film makes no attempts to fool the audience, yet it forces you to face the worst of humans: the scariest that hide in plain sight, secrets that drive people and the time it all consumes.

This film has gone on to achieve a huge status as a haunting piece of cinema. Stanley Kubrick was quoted referring to this as one of the most terrifying films he had ever seen.

As my first opportunity to show something with Cinelogue I wanted to highlight a film that is horrifying without being exploitative, a film that is capable of demonstrating the horror of being human.
