Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf at the Cinema

8 – 17 June 2025

A series of events celebrating Virginia Woolf, including talks and cinematic interpretations of her works

Marking the centenary of the publication of Virginia Woolf’s literary masterpiece Mrs Dalloway, Depot presents a series of screenings and talks exploring the relationship between the celebrated modernist author and film.

These events will consider the different ways in which filmmakers have been inspired by Woolf. Screenings include Sally Potter’s extraordinary Orlando (including a Book to Film Club screening), and Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed adaptation of Michael Cunningham’s 1998 novel The Hours, which depicts three women across different time periods whose lives are affected by the novel Mrs Dalloway, including Woolf herself.

Caroline Baylis-Green, independent scholar, adult education tutor, and visiting lecturer at the University of Sussex, will introduce The Hours as well as presenting a talk, Virginia Woolf on Film, exploring Virginia Woolf’s intriguing essay on early film, The Cinema (1926) and her related diary writing.

Please note: alongside our Book to Film Club screening of Orlando on Monday 16 June, there will also be an evening screening following Caroline Baylis-Green’s talk on Tuesday 17 June. Please book for film and talk separately.
