Saturday 30 Sept 17:00

Lewes-based milliners Lomax and Skinner will be at Depot to celebrate the launch of their new book, Millinery: The Art of Hat-Making, as part of the Gin & Fizz Festival.

Sarah Lomax and Rachel Skinner have been making hats for more than twenty years since completing their apprenticeships with the Queen’s milliner, Frederick Fox. Their desire to pass on their extensive hat-making knowledge, coupled with a passion for keeping this historic craft alive, led them to write Millinery, in which they distil their experience into clear and comprehensive step-by-step-instructions for 12 very different hats (each using minimal tools and materials), including a wool felt trilby, a chic pillbox, a fascinator and a feathered headband.

Lomax and Skinner have worked for many leading milliners and theatrical costumiers. Rachel’s designs have regularly featured in magazines such as Vogue, Tatler, Harpers & Queen and Elle and have been shown at London and Paris Fashion Weeks. Lomax & Skinner is a partnership based on a shared love of fashion and design and a long established friendship. They design and create couture and bespoke millinery for weddings, race meetings, parties and society events throughout the season.

At the launch, guests will be treated to a display of some of Sarah and Rachel’s beautiful hats and the two will give a short talk about their life in millinery and the inspiration behind the book. There will also be the chance to buy signed copies of Millinery for the special price of just £15.00 each.

Millinery: The Art of Hat-Making is published by the Guild of Master Craftsmen, priced £16.99
