FILM EVENT: Life is Beautiful (1997, 122mins)

Loosely based on a true story, this bittersweet Italian drama highlights how a father and son stand together against the nightmare of the Holocaust.  Director Robert Benigni also plays the lead role of a Jewish-Italian waiter, Guido Orefice, whose happy marriage with a schoolteacher is abruptly and catastrophically halted when the pair are separated and he and his son Giosué are taken to a concentration camp, where he tries his utmost to shield Giosué from the reality of what is happening around them.  The film won three Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film, Best Actor and Best original Score.

MUSIC AND POETRY: Standing Together
